Jackaroos finish the Six Nations Invitational with a full bag of medals

by admin on March 10, 2016

Aron Sherriff completed a golden tournament personally in the final session of the Six Nations Invitational, taking out his second gold medal of the event with a comprehensive win over South Africa’s Gerry Baker in the Men’s Singles Final as Australia finished with one medal of each colour on the final day of play. The Australian Jackaroos added a medal of every colour variety to the ledger on the final day of the Six Nation Invitational in New Zealand today.

The Jackaroos claimed a bronze, silver and gold medal at the Christchurch competition to round out the total tally, finishing with four gold, two silver and one bronze as the tournament’s most successful nation.

Barrie Lester and Nathan Rice commenced proceedings on the sixth and final day of play with a 16-13 victory over Wales to pocket the bronze in the morning session.

Karen Murphy wasn’t able to account for South Africa’s Colleen Piketh in the gold medal play-off of the blue-ribbon women’s singles, 14-21, but it took none of the gloss off the overall result of the Australian contingent.

Aron Sherriff capped off the nation’s campaign, which was the culmination of nine days of international competition following the Trans Tasman event last week, with a clinical 21-8 victory over South Africa’s Gerry Baker to secure gold in the blue-ribbon men’s singles discipline – his second for the event after guiding Ray Pearse and Brett Wilkie to glory in the triples yesterday.

New Zealand concluded the event on home-soil with three gold, two silver and a bronze to their name, as the second best performers.

The nine days of international competition will leave the Jackaroos and high performance team in good stead to mount a charge at the 2016 World Bowls Championships at the end of the year, where they will attempt to replicate their last performance of 2012, where they secured five gold and two silver medals – the most dominant performance of any nation at any World Bowls Championships.

Bowls Australia congratulate the Jackaroos and high performance staff on their efforts across the ditch.
