Australia has put its recent success behind them and set about earning more gold medal chances at the World Bowls Championships. Australia has put its recent World Bowls Championships success behind them, and set about earning the right to play for more medals, by commencing sectional rounds with four straight victories this morning.
The Jackaroos enjoyed an unblemished start to the second batch of four disciplines, the men’s singles and fours and women’s pairs and triples, after securing three gold and one silver from the initial disciplines over the weekend.
Aron Sherriff started his campaign to defend the men’s singles title, which was won by Leif Selby in 2012, with a 21-14 victory against Spain’s Peter Bonsor, who plays out of NSW’s Towradgi Park.
Sherriff faces Jersey’s Malcolm De Sousa, who also enjoyed an opening win, in round two, from 10.15am AEDT.
His teammates Barrie Lester, Brett Wilkie, Aaron Wilson and Mark Casey also joined him in the winner’s circle, with a 21-17 win against Zimbabwe, but didn’t have the contest all their own way, after finding themselves on equal pegging 13-all mid-way through the match.
The quartet encounter Norfolk Island in round two, who lost to Japan in the opening rubber.
Both women’s teams were in scintillating form on the back of their two gold medal haul, with comprehensive wins in their new line-ups.
Kelsey Cottrell and Karen Murphy combined to record a 37-8 win against Singapore in the women’s pairs, where they are attempting to defend the title that Cottrell and Rebecca Van Asch secured in 2012.
The pair play Netherlands in round two, who were defeated by England this morning.
They will next contest Canada, who lost to Wales this morning.
The triples team of Carla Krizanic, Natasha Scott and Rebecca Van Asch rolled past the Isle of Man in their contest, 44-4, which kick-started their campaign to retain the world title won by Scott, Lynsey Clark and Murphy in 2012.

The contingent will again play nine sectional rounds over three days, with post sectional stages commencing on Friday, and finals staged on Saturday and Sunday.
