Jr. Jack Attack program nearing record numbers

Bowls Australia’s (BA) Jr. Jack Attack Sporting Schools program is spearheading towards record numbers across Australia, despite a challenging 2020.

After launching in July 2015, the Jr. Jack Attack program has contributed to an increase in the number of children participating in bowls as a sport, with more than 17,000 children engaging in a fun, games-based format of lawn bowls this year alone.

Ranking in the top 20 most popular Sporting Schools options for Term 1 2020, the program eliminates the need for a bowling green and allows children to actively participate on any surface within the school environment – from greens to carpet to concrete to wooden floors.

Bowls Australia Development and Program Manager Danielle Cirillo said the program was developed, in line with the Sporting Schools initiative, to provide an opportunity for every child to play and compete in a sport they may not otherwise be exposed to and educate them that it is one of the few sports which is a “sport for life”.

“The Jr. Jack Attack program appeals to schools so much as bowls is the most inclusive sport available,” she said.

“There’s no advantage in being tall or short, strong or not so strong, male or female. It provides every child the opportunity to play and compete on an even scale.

“The newly developed partnership with Deaf Sport Australia signifies bowls’ ability, as a sport, to offer an all-inclusive option within schools and across our broader communities.

“Kids that enjoy the Jr. Jack Attack initiative at school can then go and play with their parents – one of the only sports where that is possible – and then onto a competitive Jack Attack program at  their local club”.

In partnership with Sporting Schools, Bowls Australia will help to coordinate coaches and teachers to deliver the Jr. Jack Attack program before, during and after school hours.  The program comes in the form of a kit providing all the necessary tools and resources required to deliver a fun and engaging session for a whole school class to participate in concurrently.

It permits schools to run the program anywhere on their grounds, or even the opportunity to visit a local club.

Term 4 Sporting Schools applications are now open, with Sport Australia expanding its vision for all programs.
