Junior South Pacific stars to align
The nation’s young up-and-comers will commence their Junior South Pacific campaigns today A host of Australia’s most promising young bowlers headline the 27th annual Junior South Pacific which begins today at Warilla Bowling Club, as Mike Driscoll reports for the Illawarra Mercury.
The five-day carnival has 82 players up for under-16 and open divisions of singles, and the Open Pairs.
“It’s a great field as always and a wonderful event for the 50th year of Warilla Bowling Club in 2014,” carnival organiser, Warilla’s world champion bowler Leif Selby said.
“It’d be fantastic if we could have a Warilla winner in our anniversary year but whatever the result there’ll be some excellent bowls from some outstanding young players.”
Among the top juniors taking part are Australian under-18s star Dylan Skinner, who last week reached the singles quarter-finals and fours final of the senior South Pacific carnival, also hosted by Warilla BC.
Fifteen-year-old Skinner is playing in the Open Singles and Open Pairs and is joined in the singles by Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park), Jessica Hili (Warilla), Caitlin West (Dapto), Jay Breust (Narooma), Danyon Christie (Fairy Meadow), James Jones (Thirroul), Jordan Taylor (Wiseman Park) and Warilla’s Brooke Johnston.
Twelve-year-old Jono Davis from Dubbo, part of the fours team with Skinner which made the senior South Pacific final, is another outstanding player taking part in the Open Singles and Open Pairs.
The carnival begins with the singles sectional round for both the under-16s and open event this morning.
Ten sectional rounds of pairs start tomorrow.
The singles quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on Wednesday, with the pairs quarter-finals and semis on Thursday.
All finals will be played on Friday at Warilla.
Such is the popularity of the annual carnival it has attracted players from across Sydney, Goulburn, the NSW North Coast, plus as far west in NSW as Orange, Dubbo and Leeton.
