Murphy, who last claimed the silverware in 2013, was pushed to a tie-break by Club Kawana’s Di Viterale, but secured victory by a slender margin, 5-6, 12-2, 2-1, to book a tantalising second round berth against Canada’s Kelly McKerihen.

Two-time Bowls Premier League champion Ben Twist advanced in straight sets against Warilla’s Harley McDonald, and will now face Kurri Kurri’s Nathan Dawson, who prevailed in a tie-break against Mudgeeraba’s Alan Law.

With two pull-outs resulting in byes for McKerihen and Rebecca Van Asch, the last match played in the third session was the “Ringside Live” live-streamed feature match between Blackburn’s  Neville Brown against Deer Park’s Gary Ball.
