BCiB Australian Jackaroos legend Karen Murphy AM has had yet another piece of good news in 2021 after being one of 33 women selected by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to participate in two women leadership programs to increase the representation of women in all facets of sport across the nation.

This news comes after Murphy has also been named National Assistant and Pathways Coach, as well as being appointed as a National Selector.

Murphy has been selected with 16 other sporting champions as part of the AIS Accelerate Program, which aims to increase career pathway options in sport for women athletes.

Among Murphy’s counterparts are former tennis star Casey Dellacqua and Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson.

The second group, the AIS Talent Program, consists of 16 women and is focused on advancing the professional development of women in sport behind the scenes in fields such as science, technology and medical.

The Athlete Accelerate Program will commence on June 1, and Murphy is ecstatic to join her counterparts in this initiative.

“I’m so excited to be a part of the program alongside some highly influential figures who are all in a similar transitional period to me,” she said.

“I’m extremely passionate about getting more women involved in sport, and helping them reach leadership and managerial roles.

“It’s funny I’ve never thought of myself as a trailblazer in bowls, I just love the sport.

“I’ve always just wanted to progress my playing career and now my working career, and this program is going to assist in many ways.”

Bowls Australia acknowledge and thank the Australian Institute of Sport for their contribution to the sport of bowls and its High Performance program personnel.
