Aaron Teys has been selected to participate in the Jackaroos trial camp, where he could secure a spot in the Asia Pacific Championships team. On the back of his recent red hot form, Warilla’s Aaron Teys has been given a chance to secure one of the ten highly sought-after Asia Pacific Championships positions, despite not being named in the Australian Jackaroos squad less than three months ago.

Teys has impressed international selectors in recent months with his scintillating form at some of the sport’s biggest events, which included winning the nation’s most coveted title, the Australian Open’s $16,000 blue-ribbon men’s singles crown, a semi-final finish to eventual winner Jeremy Henry at the $30,000 Australian Indoor Championships, and a stellar performance at the $60,000 National 5 A Side to help guide his Warilla Gorillas contingent to a historic third title earlier this month.

The 21 year-old apprentice greenskeeper has been given a ticket to attend the high performance selection camp in New Zealand early next month, where he will be the only participant competing for a berth from outside the 20-strong Australian Jackaroos squad.

The camp is aimed at trialing the now 21 players on the surface and conditions that will be utilised for not only the Asia Pacific Championships in November, but also next year’s World Bowls Championships.

Following the gruelling six day camp, held across the ditch from October 4 to 9, which will also see the team face Bowls Canterbury over two days, the national selection panel will confirm the five men and five women entrusted with international duties at the Asia Pacific Championships.

National Coach Steve Glasson said that in spite of not being named an Australian Jackaroo in June, Teys has a very real chance of earning an international debut at the Asia Pacific Championships if he can continue to impress selectors.

“Aaron has been in sublime form and has thoroughly impressed the selection panel with very consistent performances on the big stage.

“He comes into the camp on a level playing field as far as selection is concerned, so I encourage him to really take this opportunity with both hands.”

The 2015 Asia Pacific Championships will be staged in Christchurch, New Zealand, from November 24 to December 6.

Held every four years, the Asia Pacific Championships will feature 15 nations, with Australia the reigning champion after claiming two gold, five silver and a bronze medal to secure the 2011 overall winner’s trophy.
