Scott Thulborn and Corey Wedlock claimed the Stewart Buttar pairs title at Burnside Bowls Club in Christchurch over the weekend. World champion of champion singles titleholder Scott Thulborn won the Burnside Invitation pairs title in Christchurch after a knife-edge final victory, as Stuff.co.nz reports.

The 32-year-old Adelaide bowler beat Christchurch bowlers Alvin Gardiner 13-12  to take home the $3600 Stewart Buttar memorial tournament crown on Sunday.

Thulborn, who won his world title on the Gold Coast last November and is an Australian Jackaroos squad member, was partnered by rising young Australian star Corey Wedlock, 20, from the Cabramatta club in Sydney.

The Australians opened with two shots on the first end, but Gardiner and Paul Mathieson struck back with a four on the second  and one on the fourth for a 5-3 lead.

The score was locked at 7-7 after 10 ends before a two on the 11th allowed the Christchurch pair to sneak ahead, 9-8.

Thulborn and Wedlock wrested a vital advantage with a four on the 14th to race out to a 13-9 advantage.

Gardiner and Mathieson kept fighting until the final end, picking up three shots on the 15th, but came up one end short.
