Van Asch confident of success

Tasmania’s Rebecca Van Asch is confident that she can emulate her success from the 2012 World Bowls Championships later this month, when she commences the 2016 iteration in Christchurch. Invermay lawn bowler Rebecca Van Asch is hoping to return home from New Zealand next month with two more world championships to her name, Corey Martin reports for The Examiner.

The 2012 pairs winner will catch a flight to Christchurch on Tuesday in preparation for the World Bowls Championships from November 29 to December 11.

Van Asch, 28, will skip the Australian women’s triples team and play second in the fours.

“We have got a week of practice before we kick into it,” Tasmania’s only world bowls champion said.

“I’m looking forward to the whole experience it seems not that too long ago that the teams were picked and we have been working our butts off to try and be in the best shape we possibly can.”

Van Asch won the Australian Open pairs title with Anne Johns in June, but will not participate in the format for the Australian Jackeroos team later this month.

“I was in the fours team in 2012 and unfortunately we didn’t do as well as we would have hoped so I see this as a bit of an opportunity to fix that mistake and rectify that disappointment in the first week of the championships,” she said.

“In the second week I’m playing the triples instead of the pairs with two great mates in Natasha Scott and Carla Krizanic.

“We are going over there all guns blazing to win it. Our main aim is to medal in every discipline and of course we are hoping that is in the gold variety.”

Van Asch said she had spent time in the gym with personal trainer Jacob Gelston in preparation and that she is in the best shape of her career.

Together with on-green training the two-time national titleholder is confident of success. “I won the pairs last time and I’d love to be able to say that I’ve won a world pairs, triples and fours title,” she said.
