World Singles Champion of Champion day six wrap

Find out how Australia’s combatants went on day six of the World Singles Champion of Champion event with Brett Wilkie’s wrap-up of Scott Thulborn’s last sectional match and Katrina Wright’s post-sectional efforts. Day 6: Another fine day at Club Helensvale for the World Singles Champion of Champions, with temperatures getting to the mid 30s and green running 15-15.5.
 
Rd 11: Scott v Tim Morton – Botswana
With Thulborn needing to win to guarantee top place in his section and entry straight into the semi final, he came out of the blocks firing to lead 6-0 after 3 ends.
 
Thulborn continued to dominate to win the first set 16-3.
 
The pair traded singles in the first four ends of the second set to be 2 all.
 
Morton picked up a single on the next end to take the lead, Thulborn had 3 good shots on the next end until a perfect shot from Morton to grab one and a two shot break.
 
Thulborn regained his composure picking up four shots on the next two ends to lead by 2 going into the last end.
 
Last end and Thulborn nailed a front toucher with his second bowl before Morton drove the toucher and jack into the ditch. Thulborn drew another 2 to hold four, Morton ran into the ditch, 4 shots to Thulborn giving him the second set 10-4, the match and direct entry into the Semi Final on Sunday morning at 9am.
 
Women’s Play-off Round: Katrina v Lorna Smith – Scotland
Katrina started well drawing a toucher with her first bowl and held three until Smith drew second shot with her last.
 
Three more great shots from Katrina and two missed runners from Smith saw Wright pick up a 4-0 break after 2 ends.
 
Another couple of good ends from Wright extended her lead to 7-0 after 4 ends.
 
The next end Smith held one until a lucky rub from Wright took out Smith to hold two, Smith missed with her last, score now 9-0.
 
A good end from Smith to claim 2 shots but it was Wright who finished the stronger to win the first set 11-2
 
After trading ones to be 2 all after 4 ends, Wright sat Smith’s closest bowl out to claim 2 and the lead.
 
Another good end from Wright to pick up another double to lead 6-2 after 6 ends.
 
Smith responded with a great end of her own to claim 3 shots and trail by 1 with 2 ends to play.
 
Wright then held two until Smith drew shot with her last, Wright just drifted past the jack, 1 to Smith and level going into the last end.
 
With wright holding shot, Smith was down game with her last before promoting her own bowl for shot. With 3 seconds, Wright then drove Smith’s bowl out to claim 3 shots, the match and a berth in the semi final.
 
Women’s Semi-final – Katrina v Emma Firyana – Malaysia
After playing well in the morning Wright had trouble finding the green in the afternoon with Firyana starting well to take the early lead 5-0 after 3 ends.
 
Two down on the head, Wright drove with last and got jack but unlucky to take out her back bowl and peel off out of bounds, score now 1-7.
 
Wright then held three on the next end until Firyana drew within 2 inches with her last, Wright missed wide 1-8 after 5 ends.
 
Three more shots to Firyana saw her take out the first set convincingly 11-1.
 
A good start by both in the second set with Wright playing much more consistent to be 4 all after 4 ends.
 
Wright then stepped up a gear winning the next four ends to win the second set 10-4 and force the tie break.
 
A good start on the first end of the tie break by Wright to pick up one and the lead for the first time in the match.
 
Firyana responded with three great bowls of her own on the second end with Wright scratchy, Firyana takes the lead 3-1 with one end to play.
 
Wright drew a good shot with her first with Firyana just outside in second, Wright was unable to add with her next 3 bowls, Firyana won the tie break 3-2 and the match.
 
Firyana will now play Nici Neal (South Africa) in the final at 11am tomorrow after Neal defeated Leigh Griffin (New Zealand) in the other semi final in a tie break.
 
The Men’s Semi-finals will be played at 9am in the morning with the final at 2pm.
 
Semi Final 1: Scott Thulborn (Australia) v Neil Mulholland (Ireland)
 
Semi Final 2: Fairul Izwan (Malaysia) v Pete Bonsor (Spain)
