by admin on November 18, 2015

Jackaroos vice-captain Brett Wilkie has provided his report on Scott Thulborn and Katrina Wright’s efforts on day three of the World Singles Champion of Champion. Day 3: Glorious morning at Club Helensvale, a bit warmer earlier in the morning than other mornings but only reached the high twenties. Breeze picked up a little in the afternoon. Green running around 15.

Rd 5: Scott v Pete Bonsor – Spain
A good start by Thulborn to lead 3 nil after two ends until Bonsor replied with two great ends of his own to take the lead 5-3 after 4.

Thulborn responded with a count of 4 shots of his own over the next two ends to regain the lead 7-5.

After a good end from both trading shots, Thulborn was holding one until he trailed the jack into ditch for two. Bonsor then drove at his own toucher but was off line and hit one of Thulborn’s bowls onto his toucher which ended up next to the jack in the ditch to claim one and trail 7-6 after 7 ends.

Bonsor shortened the end, a great end from Thulborn and an unlucky drive from Bonsor handed Thulborn two shots and a three shot buffer going into the last end of the set.

The last end was a loose one from Thulborn and a good one by Bonsor to hold three, Thulborn drove and killed the jack but took out his back bowl as well to still be 3 down on the re-spot. Bonsor drew another to pick up 4 and win the first set 10-9.

Thulborn had a great start to second set with 3 inside a foot to score two 2, he then backed it up with another good 3 to lead 5 nil.

He kept this break until he led by 4 going into the last end. Good opener from Thulborn on a long end until Bonsor sliced the jack and ended up in the ditch, Thulborn dropped into the ditch before Bonsor sliced the jack again to end up with another toucher in the ditch. With the jack now 18 inches from ditch, Thulborn drew shot prior to Bonsor grazing the jack once more and drops into ditch giving him 1 shot! Thulborn tried to draw the shot and just drops into the ditch again. Bonsor looked to sit Thulborn into the ditch or trail jack was tight and rubbed off Thulborn’s first bowl near the “T” and just missed jack by going between the bowl and jack! One to Bonsor and second set to Thulborn 9-6.

Tie-break time with Bonsor holding one until Thulborn sat him through with third to claim 1. He then backed it up with another single on the second end to lead 2 nil with one end to play.

Two good openers from Thulborn to hold 2 until Bonsor drew within a foot to hold one. Down game, Bonsor then drew one inside his other to claim 2 and take it to an extra end.

With both a little scratchy on the extra end, Thulborn won the measure to win the tie break 3-2 and the match.

Rd 5: Katrina v Norma Duin – Netherlands
Duin was all over it on the first end, holding 3 close shots until Wright killed it with her last to still be one down on the respot. Wright answered straight back on the second end claiming a 4 and then a 1 to lead 5-1 after 3 ends.

Duin regained her composure to win the next 3 ends to draw level at 5 all, until Wright stepped in and won the remaining ends to win the first set 11-5.

Wright continued to dominate on the shorter ends to lead 6-0 after 5 ends of the second set.

Duin managed to win a couple of later ends but it was Wright who maintained the pressure to win the second set 9-2 and secure the win.

Rd 6: Scott v Terence Lee – Singapore
After trading ones on the first few ends, Thulborn picked up a 2 and a 3 to take a 6-2 lead after 5 ends.

Thulborn then held 3 until Lee killed it and picked up 2 on the re-spot. Lee backed this up with another good end to claim 2 shots and draw level at 6 all after 7 ends.

One shot to Thulborn gave him a 1 shot lead going into the last end of the first set. Lee drew shot with his second before the wind pushed Thulborn’s runner shot attempt wide, Lee drew another with his last to win the set 8-7.

Thulborn had a great start to the second set with a 3 on first end. He maintained the pressure to go out to an 8-1 lead after 6 ends and continued the good form to win the set 11-4.

The first end of the tie-break was good with both trading shots until Lee ran the jack into the ditch to hold three, with six feet to draw to the ditch Thulborn drew it to claim 1 on the first end.

Thulborn managed to sneak inside Lee on each of the next two ends to win the tie break 3-0.

Rd 6: Katrina v Nici Neal – South Africa
Wright came out of the blocks flying to be 5-1 up after 4 ends. She then maintained this pressure to win the set comfortably 10-2.

With Neal starting to play better late in the first set she came out all guns blazing in the second set going out to a 4 nil lead after 2 ends.

The pair then traded ends until Neal kept the upper hand of 7-3 after 6 ends.

Wright then held a good 2 and looked like getting back into the set until Neal drove and had a little luck to kill it and make 3. Wright only managed to draw third shot dropping 2 shots and making her job hard being 6 behind with 2 to play. Neal won the set 14-3 forcing the game to a tie break.

Neal had two right on it on the first end until Wright drove them out with a perfect shot to hold one. Not to be outdone Neal sat Wright’s bowl out and stayed for two shots.

Wright held one on the second end until Neal drew a toucher with her third bowl. Wright just missed narrow with a runner before Neal sat her second shot out to hold four. Wright drove with her last just missing the jack narrow, Neal won the tie break 6-0 and the match.
