2016 NSW/ACT NTC squad named
National Assistant Coach Gary Willis has bolstered his NTC squad with some new blood for 2016. Bowls Australia’s National Training Centre Coach for NSW/ACT Gary Willis has confirmed the names of his 23 player contingent for 2016.
Three new additions add depth to the talent laden squad, which is the only state and territory based NTC team to change over personnel according to the calendar year, with the other NTC Squads announced last August.
Cabramatta Bowling Club, which is the sport’s hub for NTC activities as the National Centre of Excellence, boasts two of the new members, in former South Australian Nathan Pedersen, 21, and former Queenslander Joel Andersen, 19.
Rounding out the list of new members is former Australian Development player and current skip of the NSW Blues’ Australian Sides Championships winning team, David Ferguson, 31, from Wagga Wagga.
While not entirely new to the team, Wisemans Park apprentice greenskeeper Dylan Skinner, 17, and St Johns Park’s Dawn Hayman, 18, are now both fully fledged members of the squad after progressing through the Australian Under-18 Squad, where they had previous involvement with the NTC program.
Both of the ACT members, Weston Creek’s Jessica Hogan and Mac McLean, retained their spots in the feeder team for a further 12 months.
The bulk of the NSW personnel remains unchanged, including Sarah Boddington, Ben Glasson, Andrew Howie, Damon Jeffery, Billy Johnson, Mason Lewis, Matt Miles, Natalie Noronha, Samantha Noronha, Jesse Noronha, Samantha Shannahan, Claire Turley, Ben Twist, Corey Wedlock, Molly Wilton and Jamie-Lee Worsnop.
While not part of the NTC squad anymore, Warilla’s Aaron Teys and Cabramatta’s Ellen Ryan are shining examples of where the program can lead to, after being elevated to the Australian Jackaroos team late last.
Willis, who is also the sport’s National Assistant Coach, said that the program had gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2011.
“This program affords an extremely talented group of bowlers, who have been earmarked as potential future national representatives, with an outlet to develop through regular training, team building and mentoring to help them reach the next level in their bowls careers,” Willis said.
“We have a great group of players in the squad and I encourage them to really utilise this opportunity and the challenges they will face.
“I would also like to use this opportunity to convey my thanks on behalf of the organisation and the players to Bowls NSW, Women’s Bowls NSW and Bowls ACT for their ongoing support of the NSW/ACT NTC program and these squad members.”
Bowls Australia congratulate the 23 players entrusted with developing their abilities as part of the NSW/ACT NTC Squad for 2016.
Bowls Australia would like to acknowledge the assistance and funding provided by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association to Bowls Australia for athletes in the 2016 NextGEN AUSComGames Squad program.
NextGEN AUSComGames was devised by the ACGA to provide assistance to junior players who have been identified as potential 2018 and/or 2022 Commonwealth Games level athletes.
