2023 World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day Four wrap

by Val Febbo on May 10, 2023

Both Aron Sherriff and Kelsey Cottrell have booked passage into the round of 16 in their respective singles events at the 2023 World Bowls Indoor Championships after an eventful day four in Warilla.

Sherriff commenced his morning with a comprehensive 9-3 9-4 victory over the Philippines’ Christopher Dagpin in a contest where he only dropped five ends out of the 14 played.

The Queenslander maintained his form in the final sectional round against the Cook Islands’ Royden Aperau, in which he would clinch 7-4 12-1 and only concede singles across the course of the matchup.

So much was his dominance throughout the day, Sherriff conceded just ten ends of the 28 he contested, cementing himself at the top of his group ahead of the knockout stages.

In the women’s draw, Cottrell went up against South African Commonwealth Games champion Colleen Piketh, who performed magnificently to claim a 7-6 7-3 victory over the Australian en route to concluding the sectional rounds in second place.

The Right at Home Jackaroo was only required to claim a set in her final pool clash with Macau’s Pian Lai, and that was achieved in the opening stanza as Cottrell conquered it 11-1.

With one end to play in the second set scores were locked at 3-3 with Lai able to secure the vital final end and force a decider, which she also claimed to take a resounding victory.

However, Cottrell’s strong opening to her singles campaign ensured that she would conclude the sectional rounds in second position behind Piketh, above Tonga’s Milika Nathan and Lai on net sets.

The Australian will meet Wales’ Amy Williams in tomorrow’s round of 16 clash.
