Bowls’ inclusivity shines through at Brisbane specialist school

by Bowls Australia on April 13, 2023

Bowls continues to show its open and inclusive values across the country, with the latest case study coming out of Brisbane. Below is a testimonial from Brisbane’s Mancel College.

Mancel College is a specialist Prep to Year 12 School in Brisbane for students with language disorders.

Students at the College relish the opportunity to compete in inter-school sport as much as their peers, however due to their language disorder and the additional time they need to process sensory input, alongside difficulties with conceptual understanding, many of our students find traditional competitive sports quite overwhelming and it can be hard to keep up with their peers.

Despite the barriers they face, our students are resilient, courageous, capable, and in the pursuit of finding a competitive sport that is accessible to them, they accepted the invitation and opportunity to participate in weekly training sessions with the members of the DarraCementco Bowls Club.

Lawn Bowls was a sport that was completely new to them, however held an element of intrigue, excitement, and anticipation.

From the moment our students stepped foot into the Darra Cementco Bowls Club they were given such a warm and hospitable welcome from the club’s coaching team and longstanding members.

These wonderful people took such a keen interest in our students, and over several weeks, slowly and patiently taught them the basics of the sport.

As a result of this, our students took to it like a duck to water and progressed in leaps and bounds!

Families have shared that their children are coming home and demonstrating their enthusiasm for this newfound sport.

Certainly, they are sure to express their eager anticipation for each Monday afternoon session with all who will listen!

Mancel College students are committed to making the most of this wonderful opportunity and hope to continue to develop their skills.
