2021 Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year and Emerging Jackaroo Jake Rynne has become the recipient of the joint Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship, granting the young bowler a variety of assistance platforms throughout his tertiary studies.

Through this, Rynne will receive a $10,000 cash scholarship, membership to QUT’s Elite Athlete Program and membership to QUT’s College of Excellence.

To be eligible, one must be a nationally recognised athlete, a commencing or continuing student at QUT and meet academic and citizenship eligibility requirements among other selection criteria.

The scholarship is provided for a two-year period, and Rynne, an engineering student, said the grant will go a long way in assisting his tertiary studies when faced with so many bowls commitments.

“There’s only ten people at uni that have it, I think, so I get ten grand out of it and basically whenever I’m playing bowls they work uni around it which really helps,” he said.

“It will be along the lines of deferring assessment dates, as well as doing a bit of uni work while I’m away at bowls.

“For example when there’s practicals that I have to be there for but I’m at bowls, they will shift that around for me, especially coming up we’ve got District Sides, State titles and the Australian Open, which is five weeks out already.

“With the Australian Champion of Champions coming up, they will change classes around to suit that.”

The university also grant concessions to the Queenslander when registering for classes, as well as access to some of the faculty’s best minds.

“I get first pick of classes when I’m registering, so for engineering there’s a lot of students so it really helps that I get first choice to work around bowls,” Rynne said.

“With the scholarship I get into the College of Excellence at the uni, which opens me up to other exclusive stuff, like whenever I need specialised help and we even go on camps that assist with leadership skills.

“We get to have access to meetings and conversations with people who have been there and done that.”
