Turls is a mastermind: Teys

by Val Febbo on October 26, 2021

The Bowls Premier League (BPL) has witnessed two ‘dynasty’ style performances in its short history to date, with the Sydney Lions claiming a three-peat from BPL04-06 and the Tweed Heads Ospreys currently in the midst of their own glorious run.

The franchise took a clean sweep of the events in 2021 (BPL12 in Moama and BPL13 at Club Pine Rivers) as well as hoisting the trophy at BPL10 at the end of 2019, making them champions at three of the last four editions.

Aaron Teys and Chloe Stewart have been ever present through the trio of triumphs, with Kurt Brown in the side for their inaugural championship before Corey Wedlock’s inclusion in the team.

Behind the scenes as the coach of the Ospreys is Wayne Turley OAM, who has overseen this powerhouse take shape at the made-for-television event.

Teys himself has been labelled as ‘Mr BPL’, as he and Aron Sherriff are the only players to hold four titles as players, as well as some stellar performances seeing him become a two-time MVP of the tournament.

Speaking on Bowls Australia’s ‘The Right Line’ podcast, the 27-year-old has pinpointed the influence of Turley as one of the most important factors in the franchise’s recent dominance.

“Honestly, I’d have to say Turls [is the biggest influence],” he said.

“Turls is just an awesome coach, I get really frustrated with myself, Kurt used to, Chloe does and Corey does and he just pulls us aside every time we don’t go well for a little while and says that there are no expectations and to stop being so hard on ourselves.

“He just wants us to go and enjoy ourselves and if anything comes from it then fantastic, but he reiterates that the Club Tweed CEO is behind us, the director is behind us and the whole club is behind us,

“He is just so good to play for and is just a great confidence booster.”

Teys will make his bowling return in the Victorian Premier League for Deer Park before heading up to the Broadbeach Bulls for the Queensland Premier League shortly after.
