Van Asch was able to go one step further than her most recent attempt at the coveted $30,000 event, which saw her finish as a semi-finalist in 2012, and is now just one win away from a maiden national indoor title and a spot in the 2017 World Cup – a spoil afforded to both winners. Tasmania’s Rebecca Van Asch is the first person to qualify for the Australian Indoor Championships final.

Van Asch was able to go one step further than her most recent attempt at the coveted $30,000 event, which saw her finish as a semi-finalist in 2012, and is now just one win away from a maiden national indoor title and a spot in the 2017 World Cup – a spoil afforded to both winners.

Van Asch will attempt to become the first Tasmanian winner of the time-honoured Australian Indoor Championships, now in its 29th year, with fellow Apple Isle resident Mark Nitz the only other to progress as far the ultimate decider.

The World Bowls Championships-bound Jackaroo escaped with a narrow first set victory following a measure for Dawn Hayman’s second bowl, 8-7, but had the game more her way in the second set, posting a 10-1 score.

“I was holding my breath walking up the rink at the end of the first set,” Van Asch said.

“ I didn’t know if she managed to get 2 from the draw or not and there was only a measure in it, so it was good to sneak away with that one, after that I wanted to put my foot done in the second set .

“It was a great quality game, that was one of the best quality singles games I’ve ever been apart of, the scoreline of the second set certainly wasn’t a testament of the quality of the match.”

Van Asch is yet to learn the name of her next opponent, either Sam Noronha or Natasha Scott, but will be aware of who she is to face in tomorrow’s 11.00am final decider following the second semi this afternoon, which is poised to commence at 2.00pm.

Play will continue at Tweed Heads, with the first men’s semi between reigning titleholder Jeremy Henry and Jackaroos juggernaut Barrie Lester.

The semi-finals and finals of both the men’s and women’s disciplines will be televised on SBS’ The Bowls Show from Sunday, September 4 at 1.00pm and will run across four episodes.
